Tuesday Tribute: Portero de Los Blancos

We've all heard of the story of the Filipino who helped FC Barcelona dominate Spain. While El Romperedes (The Net Breaker) was scoring goals and setting records, another Filipino was stopping goals while playing for Barcelona's archrivals, Real Madrid.

Eduardo Teus López-Navarro, or simply Teus, was goalkeeper for Real Madrid between 1913 and 1918 winning 7 titles with them, including a Copa del Rey.

Teus was born in Manila in 1896. And although not much is written about him, it is a fact that Alcantara and Teus faced each other. Twice, in fact, in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.

In the first clash, it was Alcantara who won 2-1 with Barcelona. But it was Teus who emerged victorious on their second duel ending 4-2 Real Madrid.

He has won a total of 6 Campeonatos Regionales Partidos and a Copa del Rey with Real Madrid.

A photo of Teus was found on an exhibit at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu.

The photograph, submitted by Asian Football Confederation women's committee member Cristina Ramos to Cebu Football, shows a photo of Teus and the flag alongside French legendary midfielder Zinedine Zidane and other foreign players who have suited up for Los Blancos.

We may no longer be as good as our footballing ancestors are, but let our roots remind us that we were once a footballing nation. And we certainly can be again.
