James Younghusband is hanging up his boots. The Philippine footballing nation is sad to say goodbye to an Azkals legend in James Younghusband following his announcement of his retirement from professional football.
The 33-year old midfielder started his career with Chelsea Youth through a scholarship when he was just 10 years old. But it was his exploits with the Azkals that earned him his place in the hearts of the nation.
He and his also recently retired younger brother, Phil, were first called up for the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, which was held in the Philippines. And he has been instrumental in several of our nation's football milestones including the 'Miracle of Hanoi' and our AFC Qualifier game against Tajikistan at home.
He has made 101 appearances and has scored 12 goals proudly wearing our nation's banner.
Through his Facebook page, he has officially announced his retirement from football, thanking everyone involved in his growth as a player and as a person.
He's played for several clubs during his youth, including Chelsea FC. But he started his football in the Philippines with San Beda for the 2011 National Club Championships under former Azkals coach Aris Caslib.
After that stint, he and his younger brother would be joining Loyola Agila, which then became Loyola Meralco Sparks in the United Football League, and eventually became FC Meralco Manila in the Philippines Football League.
In August 2017, he was officially signed by Davao Aguilas. He and his brother, Phil, played for the club for two seasons until its dissolution by the end of the 2018 season.
Finally, James signed with Ceres Negros FC in August 2019, playing for the club up until his retirement.
His contributions to Philippine Football, both domestically and internationally, will never be forgotten. You may have hung your boots, but you will always have a place in the hearts of Philippine supporters.
